Salem American Tour Departure
Memorial Concert in Lansdowne 7 September 2008 at 14:30
This year marks the 5th anniversary of our tragic accident on 8 September 2003 in which eight of our players, Albert Engel, Jerome Engel, Roné Morkel, Geoffrey Joemath, Mark Davids, Gain Goodall, Jacques Adonis and Randall Adonis lost their lives on their way back from Namibia with a group of players who participated in the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Luthern Brass Band.
This accident was the biggest tragedy to befall the Moravian Church at he time. This year another grave tragedy befell the Church when several members of the Church lost their lives in a bus accident in Mvenyane whilst using public transport.
In order to mark the anniversary of the 2003 accident the Salem Bands will be holding a Memorial Concert in Lansdowne on 7 September 2008 at 14:30 to celebrate the contribution to Moravian music made by the above eight, and all other players of BBSA who passed before us. The proceeds of the concert will be donated to the Albert Engel Bursary Fund administered by Stellenbosch University and the Pat Johannes Trust Fund administered by BBSA.
Whilst in the Western Cape the Salem band members are looking to interact with other BBSA members and will be holding Pop Concerts in Genadendal and Bellville on the 5th and 6th September 2008 respectively. They are also raising funds for an intended tour next year. On 7 September 2008, they will participate in the morning worship service at Bridgetown.
The Pop Concerts will feature their Brass Ensemble, Stage Band and Concert Band. The Stage Band will not participate in the Memorial Concert, but they have invited the MOCUSA District 3 Choir to join them in the concert, and the choir will be singing 4 pieces with the bands. The programme, typically, includes music from different periods ranging from Bach’s Sleepers, Wake and pieces from Handel’s Messiah to a modern arrangement, Every Morning New, which is dedicated to all the men and women who serve in Christian Education. For the purpose of this concert the piece will be especially dedicated to all those who served in church music and went before us.
Apart from the above concerts, the Salem Bands will also hold two concerts in Port Elizabeth:
On 28 August 2008, they will hold a Charity Concert at the Salem Church to raise funds for the Salem Welfare Association.
On 10 September 2008, they will hold a Memorial Concert in the St Martin de Porres Church Hall, on the 8th Anniversary of the death of Henry A Hitzeroth, a former player of theirs who served on the executive of BBSA for a number of years. This year also marks the:
21st Anniversary of the death of James R Hitzeroth, a former leader of theirs,
20th Anniversary of the death of Frederick Brown, a former player of theirs, and
10th Anniversary of the death of Simon Fox, another former leader of theirs.
